A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
